When users connect to XenApp Server running Windows 2003, 2008, and 2008 R2, sessions reconnect to existing sessions from different devices.

Symptoms or Error

An issue occurs when a user connects to a published Notepad on Server 1 from workstation 1 and leaves the session logged on, then goes to workstation 2 and connects to a published Notepad on Server 1. The user gets connected to the session that was running on workstation 1 instead of creating a new session.

Solution

Go to Terminal Server Configuration > Server Settings > Restrict Each User to One Session, and change the option to NO.

Note: This is a per-server setting and must be done on each Windows 2003, 2008, and 2008 R2 Server. Group policies override the configuration set with the Terminal Services Configuration tool.

For Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2, the tool is Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration.

Problem Cause

Windows 2003, 2008 and 2008 R2 Server installations contain a default setting, Restrict Each User to One Session??in the Terminal Configuration options in the server settings that allows users to connect only to one session.

Note: The same issue occurs when using RDP through a server desktop and initial applications connections.
