This article describes about EdgeSight Agent Worker Function Log Files.

Information

The EdgeSight Agent is a service that runs on the remote device and collects data, which it writes into a client-side database. The Agent performs various functions related to collecting data, aggregating the data into a payload, and sending the payload to the EdgeSight Server. The Agent also performs database maintenance, sizing, and tuning. It performs these tasks through the use of worker functions (also known as workers).

EdgeSight Agent Workers

The EdgeSight Agent consists of workers that run periodically. Some of these workers log information into log files. The SYS_EVENT_TXT.txt file, located in the EdgeSight Agent data folder (by default at C:\ProgramData\Citrix\System Monitoring\Data on Vista/2008 and higher systems, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Citrix\System Monitoring\Data on pre-Vista/2008 systems), indicates which workers have run and at what time.

It also logs any errors that may occur when a specific worker tries to run, which is helpful when diagnosing issues. Not all workers create a log file, because they are internal to the product and provide product maintenance.

The following are the workers and their descriptions:

Workers used by both XenApp and XenDesktop

  • Worker 1: "Database Tuning" – internal Agent database maintenance, no log is created

  • Worker 2: "Database Maintenance" ?? internal Agent database maintenance, no log is created

  • Worker 101: "Performance Upload" – uploads Agent data to the Server

  • Worker 102: "Drive Space Calculation" – calculates drive space on the device

  • Worker 103: "Asset History" – collects the asset history of the device

  • Worker 104: "Init" – runs on the initial Agent start-up, facilitating the creation of the Agent database and performs the first upload to the Server and download of the first configuration check to the Agent

  • Worker 105: "Configuration Check" – downloads the Agent configuration from the Server and implements configuration changes

  • Worker 106: "Active Directory (AD)" – runs an Active Directory script

  • Worker 107: "Fault Report Cleanup" – maintains and cleans up files created for fault and snapshot reports

  • Worker 108: "Fault Report Preparation" – builds fault reports and uploads them to the server

  • Worker 109: "Trace Route" – executes a network trace route

  • Worker 110: "RISH Log Cleanup" – maintains and cleans up logs created from RISH

  • Worker 150: "Bullet Worker" – uploads alert information to the EdgeSight Server

  • Worker 151: "Process Performance" – fires a process performance alert

  • Worker 152: "PnP Hardware Event" – generates a PnP event

  • Worker 153: "System Performance" – fires a system performance alert

  • Worker 154: "NT Event Log" – determines if alertable conditions exist in the NT Event Log

  • Worker 155: "Event-based Process Alert" – controls the generation of process centric event alerts

  • Worker 156: "Reboot" – determines if a reboot occurred

  • Worker 157: "Light Trace Alert" – determines if alertable conditions exist in light trace event

  • Worker 158: "Network Alert" – determines if alertable conditions exist in network data

  • Worker 159: "Drive Failure Prediction" – reports predictive drive failure errors?? determined by SMART-enabled drives

Workers specific to XenApp

  • Worker 126: "Database Sizing" – database size tuning

  • Worker 127: "Published Applications Cleanup" – determines if published applications are up to date

  • Worker 128: "CPS Environment Info" – collects and stores information about the XenApp environment

  • Worker 175: "CPS Perf Alert" – determines if alertable conditions exist in session data (session, system, EUEM)

  • Worker 176: "Session Disconnect" – shell worker for event-based Session Disconnect Alerts

  • Worker 177: "ATM Alert" – determines if alertable conditions exist in ATM (Active Transaction Monitoring) / AAM (Active Application Monitoring) data

  • Worker 178: "Sessions In Down State" – determines if alertable conditions exist for down sessions

  • Worker 179: "Session Idle Length" – determines if alertable conditions exist for idle sessions.

  • Worker 180: "Zone Election Frequency" – determines if alertable conditions exist for frequent zone elections.

  • Worker 181: "Servers In A Zone" – determines if alertable conditions exist for the number of servers in a zone

  • Worker 182: "Printer Tracking" – determines if alertable conditions exist for printers

Workers specific to XenDesktop

  • Worker 200: "VDA Environment Info" – collects and stores information about the XenDesktop environment (equivalent to Worker 128)

  • Worker 201: "VDA Perf Alert" – determines if alertable conditions exist in session data (session, system, EUEM; equivalent to Worker 175)

The worker log files can be found in the \EdgeSight\log folder located in the EdgeSight Agent data folder. You might also see other logs different than the ones described in the preceding directory because some alerts run as scripts and log their activities.

The worker log files contain information useful in troubleshooting issues that occur related to the various work functions performed by the Agent.

Check the SYS_EVENT_TXT.txt file to see if a worker has experienced any issues. Based on the information there, look to the specific worker log for more detailed information.
For example, if the SYS_EVENT_TXT.txt file makes a reference to the following error message:
"Running worker 101 - 'Performance Upload' with trigger 1071"
You can look in the log folder for the text file that begins with "Worker101_Trigger1071…"

The logs of the most interest tend to be the ones associated with the upload and configuration workers, because they help to resolve connectivity issues between the Agent and server. For that reason, the logs for workers 101, 104, and 105 are typically the most useful in troubleshooting this sort of problems.
