This article describes the position of Citrix to use kernel- mode(version 2) print drivers with XenApp.

Information

Kernel print drivers were introduced at time of Windows NT where memory was scarce and performance was the major factor for usability. User-mode drivers were commonly used in Windows. For example, on Windows Server 2008 and later, the operating system blocked the installations of kernel-mode print driver.

Kernel-mode (Version 2) drivers

Citrix strongly recommends not to use kernel-mode drivers on a XenApp server. These drivers are not designed for Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Services environments and can lead to stability and performance issues or even server crashes. Always use user-mode (Version 3) drivers designed for Terminal Services and Remote Desktop Services environments. The native or inbox drivers within the operating system are always preferred than the one provided by the non-native or manufacturer to ensure performance and stability.
